Annual Youth Aflame Retreat

Each fall we host a big weekend youth retreat in Lindale, TX. In October 2012 we had a great group of teens who were open to receive from the Lord. Read the story of one youth.

Catholic Youth Learn To Focus On Evangelism

By REBECCA HOEFFNER (Tyler Paper)

Catholic youth and young adults from across the United States and Canada will sacrifice their spring break this year to work with Kerygma, a branch of the evangelistic organization Youth With A Mission, geared toward training Catholics to focus on evangelism.

"A lot of people don't know YWAM has a Catholic branch," Lori Harris, national co-director of Kerygma, said. "We're trying to work with Protestants and be more ecumenical."

Students are being trained in their faith during the weekend before being sent to Houston to minister to the homeless community.

Ultimately, the trip isn't just about learning theology, Mrs. Harris said. "What church kid doesn't have it in their head?

We're trying to convert their heart," she said.

Rocio Martinez, a senior at Mineola High School, grew up all her life in church but never really felt God's presence, she said. "I was just going through the motions," she said.

She gave up going to her homecoming dance to attend a youth retreat with Kerygma. She said she heard from God at the retreat and it was a "once in a lifetime" experience. Her experience at the retreat convinced her to get more involved with missions, she said.

"I got a taste of God's power and heart and I wanted to experience more," she said.

To raise money for the $535 spring break

trip, Miss Martinez designed and sold bracelets that read "Jesus is greater than religion, Romans 4:5," inspired by the popular "Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus" viral video on YouTube. She raised all the money she needed from selling the bracelets alone.

Nicole Gaucher, 22, traveled with others from Canada to participate in the spring break trip. Ms. Gaucher previously lived in Houston.

"I love the people here, I love the South," she said. "At the same time, I saw a lot of need in Houston. This is my opportunity to give back."

Kerygma Texas and YWAM Tyler join forces for 10 Day Spring Break Mission to Houston March 8-18

The world behind me, the Cross before me!

Youth from North America will converge in Garden Valley, TX at the YWAM Alaso Village to prepare their hearts and train for assault on the devil in Houston, TX during the first Catholic Spring Break Mission. This unique group of youth have raised their own funds and come to East Texas during their holiday break to learn more about their faith and how to share it. They will do just that, when this team heads for Houston and minister on the streets of the city, the love of Jesus to the lost. "Catholics are great at service. That is a given. But for too long Catholics have not known how to share their faith in a real and tangible way. Every Christian needs to know how to lead someone to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and we intend to make that happen. This is just the beginning of a long range vision to see Catholic youth mobilzed to evangelize," stated Kerygma Directors, Lori and Alan Harris.
